Cold sores and canker sores are the two most common disorders in the human mouth. If you know the difference between the two, this will help your choice in treatment.

Location is the difference between cold sores and canker sores. While both can and do occur inside the mouth, the cold sore is more prominent outside the mouth. However, canker sores are only found inside the mouth, where they can affect the tongue, cheeks, lips, and in rare instances, the throat.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research says the cause of canker sores is not well understood. Viruses or bacteria do not invoke canker sores. Instead, they are the biproduct of allergic reactions, nutritional deficiencies, some form of autoimmune disease, emotional stress or hormonal imbalances.

Canker sore treatment can be allergy testing, nutritional supplements, non-prescription numbing agents (benzocaine), and mouth rinses containing an anti-inflammatory agent or an antibiotic (tetracycline). A 1:1 dilution of hydrogen peroxide with water is a common canker sore home remedy. This is then dabbed on the canker sore using a cotton swab. Milk of magnesia in small amounts can then be applied to the canker sore 3 or 4 times daily - soothing the canker sore and helping the healing process.

Cold sores are different. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores have been known to return even after the first sore is gone. Since it is a virus, it can be transmitted very easily through kissing.

Science has yet to find a cure for the herpes virus, so until then, one must rely on cream and other medication to take care of outbreaks.
